History

Newcastle Airport was established at Woolsington in 1935. It was used as a fighter base during World War II and hosted early Cold War interceptors in the 1950s. The Metro connection opened in 1991 — a significant achievement that transformed access to the airport. Passenger numbers have grown from under 1 million in 1985 to over 5 million today.
