History

Birmingham Airport opened in 1939 just before the outbreak of World War II, during which it served as a military airfield. It was expanded significantly in the post-war period and continued to grow through the package holiday boom of the 1970s and 1980s. A major terminal expansion was completed in 2011 and a new Terminal 2 opened in 2023, significantly increasing capacity. The airport is owned by a consortium including Birmingham City Council, seven other local authorities and the Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan.
