About London Luton Airport
London Luton Airport is the fifth largest London area airport, located 32 miles north of central London in Bedfordshire. It is a primary base for easyJet, Ryanair, Wizz Air and TUI, handling predominantly leisure short-haul traffic across Europe and North Africa. A major new terminal building is transforming passenger facilities.
Terminals
▶Single terminal (all airlines)
⚠️ One terminal. New expanded terminal building opened 2024 — improved facilities including expanded security and airside retail.
History
Luton Airport opened in 1938 and played a role in aircraft manufacturing during World War II — Vauxhall Motors used adjacent land for war production. It grew substantially during the 1960s and 70s as a charter airport serving the package holiday boom. The airport is unusual in that it is owned by Luton Borough Council and operated under a concession — currently held by AENA of Spain. A £160 million terminal transformation opened in 2024.
